Does Veterans Day Affect Direct Deposit? Payday Guide

Veterans Day is a federal holiday, the Federal Reserve is closed and ACH does not settle. What that means for a payday that lands on or just after November 11.

Direct deposit feels instant, but it runs on the Automated Clearing House network, which settles only on business days. Federal holidays therefore ripple through payroll in ways that catch people out, and Veterans Day on November 11 is one of them.

Why a Holiday Matters

When an employer runs payroll, the file is transmitted to the bank, which sends it through ACH for settlement on a future business day. If a federal holiday falls between those points, the Federal Reserve is closed and no settlement occurs. The entire schedule shifts by one business day.

This is a banking constraint rather than an employer decision, which is why the effect is the same across employers.

What Usually Happens to the Payday

If your scheduled payday falls on Veterans Day itself, most employers pay on the preceding business day. Being paid a day early is the common outcome, not a day late.

The delay scenario is different: when the holiday sits between the employer's submission and the settlement date, a deposit scheduled for the day after the holiday can arrive later than usual. Employers who are aware of the calendar submit earlier to avoid this.

Early Access Apps

Some banking apps advertise getting paid up to two days early. They do this by crediting your account when they receive the employer's payment instruction rather than waiting for settlement. It is a real convenience, but it does not change when ACH settles, so a holiday can still shift the underlying timing.

I set out the full federal holiday calendar and how each one interacts with common pay schedules in my guide to Veterans Day and direct deposit for Online Paystub.

What to Do

Check your employer's payroll calendar before the holiday week and plan any automatic payments that fall near it. If a deposit has not arrived by the end of the next business day after the holiday, ask payroll to confirm the transmission date before contacting your bank, since that is where the answer usually lies.
